July 2026

The Presidents Pulpit Associated Image

Hello Wastewater Professionals,

July was a hot summer month in Western Pennsylvania—ideal for water sports, swimming, and enjoying our water resources to stay cool. The July 2026 Climate Breakdown for Pittsburgh, based on data from the Pittsburgh Climate Monitor, shows how the month unfolded: the average temperature was 75.4°F, 2.2°F above the historical normal of 73.2°F. The month’s highest temperature reached 95.0°F on July 3 during the pre-holiday heat wave, while the coolest night dropped to a refreshing 51.0°F on July 23. Total rainfall reached 4.46 inches, slightly above the monthly norm of 4.26 inches. The month began with extreme heat and heavy humidity, with Western Pennsylvania reaching 90°F or higher six times in the first ten days. After July 17, however, a weather shift brought temperatures back to near or below average, closing out the month with a much more comfortable stretch of summer weather.

July was also a hot month for the Western Pennsylvania Water Pollution Control Association. On July 17, WPWPCA held its Plant Tour and Luncheon/Business Meeting at the Eaton Power Systems Experience Center in Warrendale, PA. The event attracted more than 75 attendees. The Eaton Experience Center tour was outstanding, offering valuable education on industry best practices and the latest innovations through training across multiple application environments. Attendees explored power management solutions from utility power systems down to the receptacle in a home or office.

Several excellent training opportunities are on the schedule, along with the WPWPCA August Family Picnic. The annual WPWPCA Golf Outing is also coming up on August 21st. Please register for the golf outing soon at wpwpca.org. On September 18, WPWPCA will hold a Plant Tour hosted by the Clairton Municipal Authority at 1 N. State St., Clairton, PA 15025. The Clairton Municipal Authority completed a plant expansion in the fall of 2025 through two phases. Phase I included a new influent pump station and headworks, dewatering facility, and digester, with construction completed in 2019. Phase II included the MBR process and wet-weather storage and treatment facilities; construction began in August 2022 and was completed in October 2025. The project increased the plant’s average capacity from 6 MGD, with a 10 MGD peak, to 10.83 MGD average flow and a 38.23 MGD peak. Lunch location is TBD.
