Tom has a B.S. in Environmental Science from California State College in California, PA and a Masters Degree in Environmental Pollution Control from Pennsylvania State University in University Park, PA. He began his career in the water treatment field by working as a Wastewater and Water Treatment Plant Operator for a contract operations firm in Northern Virginia. With the experience and knowledge he learned from being an operator he took a job as an Environmental Scientist with an engineering firm outside of Washington, DC for four years. At this position he was primarily involved with the worldwide U.S. Army Operator Assistance Program, which provided diagnostic evaluations, technical guidance and training at Army water and wastewater treatment plants all across the United States. He moved back to the Pittsburgh area in 1989, where he was born and raised, and was employed by Chester Engineers where he worked for ten years with the Field Services Department. In this capacity he primarily worked with Chester's Municipal Clients providing water and wastewater treatment troubleshooting, plant evaluations, startups and guidance to Municipal Clients. He decided to try out working directly for Municipal Governments in 1998. First, Tom worked for the Hempfield Township Municipal Authority (HTMA) in Greensburg, PA. At HTMA he work as Supervisor of Operations and Maintenance for the Authority, which included six wastewater treatment plants and six pump stations within Hempfield Township. After this position he became employed as the Director with the Municipality of Penn Hills Water Pollution Control Department. In this capacity he oversees the operation of two activated sludge wastewater treatment plants and seven high flow equalization facilities. Tom presently holds a Class A, Type I Sewage Treatment Plant Operators Certificate in Pennsylvania and Virginia Class II Wastewater Works and Class II Waterworks Operator Certificates. He was part of the task force and a principal author of "Wastewater Sampling for Process and Quality Control" a Water Environment Federation Manual of Practice (No. OM-1) in 1996. He served as the Western PA Water Pollution Control Association Program Committee Chairman from 1995 to 2000 and is currently co-chairmen. The WPWPCA awarded him with the Bologna Award in 1999 for service to the Western Section. Tom lives in Apollo, Pennsylvania (Washington Township) with his wife Vicki
and daughter Maureen. They enjoy out door activities like kayaking, canoeing,
camping and fishing. However, taking care of their homestead seems to take
all their time. |
