Tom O'Grady
President 2007

I am honored to be the President of the Western Pennsylvania Water Pollution Control Association in its 52nd year. This industry has come a long way in the last 52 years and it is organizations like the WPWPCA that have helped the industry move forward.

I joined this association in 1990 when I moved back to Pennsylvania from Virginia. I didn’t really know anyone in the wastewater business around Western Pennsylvania and the WPWPCA proved to be an invaluable way to make contacts and friends with people in the same field as myself.

2007 will be another great year for the WPWPCA. Our slate of plant tour/meeting sites includes a tour of Industrial Scientific where we will see how gas monitoring equipment is assembled and repaired. We will also visit three wastewater treatment plants; Kiski Valley, Kittanning, and McCandless.

The Association will continue providing helpful training courses for our members. Bob Bible and the Training Committee have done an excellent job lining up these courses and I’m certain this will continue in 2007.

The golf outing, which has always been very successful and enjoyable, will continue. The outing benefits our scholarship fund, a very worthwhile cause. The summer picnic will continue as well. This year’s picnic will be held at Idlewild on August 12th. It is always well received and gives our members a chance to meet each others families at a fun family event.

Dennis Mike has volunteered to head up the Editorial/Newsletter Committee next year so the newsletter will live on. I would like to thank Joe Leech for the excellent job he has done in the past. We are discussing having an e-mail-type newsletter, and possibly a hard copy one as well.

I hope everyone has checked out the WPWPCA website. The website allows the members easy access to current news, section events, and registration information for events and links to other sites.

The WPWPCA is now organizing what we call WEST-TEC which will be a two day event that combines the non-domestic wastewater forum (an off-shoot from previous Pretreatment Forums), the trade show, and training classes. WEST-TEC will be a combined effort of the Industrial Waste & Pretreatment, Training, and Trade Show Committees. WEST-TEC will be a great benefit to local mid-level type operators and maintenance personnel who might not have the advantage to attend PENNTEC or WEFTEC. We anticipate it to be a great event that will be carried on for many years to come.

Training and the advancement of knowledge is the backbone of this organization. This training is achieved by:

    • The courses arranged and offered by the training committee.
    • The plant tours that give everyone an opportunity to see how other plants and organizations operate.
    • Discussions with vendors and equipment manufacturers.
    • Meeting with fellow members to discuss issues or problems of the day.

The association will continue to keep our members informed about current issues before us, like lab accreditation, operator liability under the law, new treatment technologies, collection system issues and any other topics or concerns that come up over the course of a new year.

The president and the association are only as good as the committee chairs and members. I urge everyone to join a committee and make the association a first class organization for years to come. There are currently 24 committees that members can get involved in, so there should be something to interest just about everybody.

I ask that all the membership participate in the association events planned in the coming year. Membership participation is the key to the continued success of our organization. Also, please get your coworkers, vendors, and other associates to join the Water Pollution Control Association and help keep this a terrific organization.

In closing, I see 2007 as being a fantastic year and, once again, I am very proud to be president in our 52nd year. Thank you.
