Director of Operations & Maintenance, ALCOSAN


Since beginning his career at the Allegheny County Sanitary Authority in 1987, Mark B. Hannum has held a number of progressive positions at the 200 MGD wastewater treatment plant.

Beginning as Shift Operations Engineer and then as Superintendent, Mark was responsible for day-to-day shift operation and management of the 53-acre facility. Promoted to Manager of Industrial Waste in 1992, Mark oversaw the implementation of the pretreatment program making it a national model through the establishment of additional compliance and enforcement of industrial and commercial businesses within the 83 community service area. Mark assumed additional responsibility in 1997 when he was named Manager of the on-site Laboratory that is responsible for the collection and analysis of samples for permit compliance. In December of 1999, Mark was promoted to Director of Operations and Maintenance. Mark and his staff are responsible for the effective operation of the Authority's entire wastewater treatment facility in order to meet permit requirements. As Director, Mark works closely with others in executive management to establish organizational goals and continuous improvement strategies, such as accountability enhancements. Mark is involved in the difficult task of coordinating normal operation and maintenance activities in conjunction with the on-going plant expansion program.

Before joining ALCOSAN, Mark, a licensed treatment plant operator, served as the Municipal Chemist for the Vanport Township Municipal Authority in Beaver County.

His accomplishments include: current President of the PWEA and received an appointment by the Director of the US EPA as the local government stakeholder representative under the Common Sense initiative for Iron and Steel Manufacturing. Mark's professional memberships include the Water Environment Federation, the Pennsylvania Water Environment Association, and the Western Pennsylvania Water Pollution Control Association. Mark received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry from Gannon University and Pretreatment Certification from the California State University in Sacramento.

Mark resides in Beaver Falls with his wife Holly and their two children, Blakely and Hannah.
